Hey Everyone!! Thanks so much for praying for camp these last 2ish weeks. It went amazingly! For me it was especially difficult, as I was in a leadership role over the English portion of the camp, which was tough to say the least. I remember when Kurt and I were first talking about camp, and he asked what I thought about a leadership role. I remember saying "well, I really suck at it, so I guess I should use this as an opportunity to get better at it!". From the very beginning, I was keenly aware that upfront leadership is most definitely NOT my strong suit- even at Young Life, I enjoyed leading, but as a part of a team, and not over everything. But at the same time, just because you're not good at something (and just because you don't like it) doesn't mean that you shouldn't try. So I did.
About the end of Week 1 of camp, I saw myself slowly fading in energy, patience, ideas, and ability to stay awake. But it was in that moment that the Lord showed me what real leadership is. Through a great conversation about midway through the camp, God showed me that leadership is just service- showing up to serve. But more importantly, leadership requires a strength that is beyond anything you can do alone. To lead as Jesus led requires us to be strengthened as Jesus was strengthened- through the Father's strength. Thankfully, God is merciful, and was glad to give me a second chance at this whole leadership thing before the camp was even over. The 2nd week was SO much better- I saw the difference instantly. And the crazy thing is that I didn't do a whole lot differently- I just showed up to serve and asked God to show me what to do and to give me strength to do it. And He did.
Why am I still a bit surprised when God shows up in life circumstances? I should be used to that by now..
